Constraint of the Week: Tuesday Lunch

Tuesday Lunch, Constraint #72

Every Tuesday for a month, have lunch with someone you barely know or don’t know at all. A colleague you’ve crossed paths with, a neighbour, someone you met last week.

Reference artist(s): Allan Kaprow.

The protocol

  1. Commit to one month… four Tuesdays, four lunches.
  2. Identify the people for the four weeks in advance if possible. They must all be people you barely know or don’t know at all.
  3. Propose the lunch without a specific agenda: “I’m doing an artistic constraint… I’m having lunch with someone I barely know every Tuesday this month. Want to come?”
  4. During lunch, no particular rule about what to talk about. Just be present.
  5. After each lunch, write one sentence: what you learned that you didn’t know before. Four sentences by the end of the month. Upload to the site.

Variations

  • Do it on the same day each week but at a different time… morning, noon, afternoon, evening.
  • Each time, invite someone from a different generation than your own.
