Constraint of the Week: The Impossible Ringtone

The Impossible Ringtone, Constraint #69

Replace your phone ringtone with a sound you recorded yourself. Your child’s voice, the rain on your window, your morning coffee. Keep it for a month.

Reference artist(s): Merzbow.

The protocol

  1. Record a sound from your daily life… a sound you like or that has meaning for you. Twenty seconds is enough.
  2. Import this sound into your phone as your ringtone and notification tone.
  3. Keep it for a full month. No changes, even if it’s awkward in public.
  4. Note the reactions of people around you. Note how you feel when the phone rings in public.
  5. After a month, write three sentences about how this ringtone changed your relationship with your phone. Submit the original recording and the text on the site.

Variants

  • Change the sound every week for a month. Four sounds, four states of mind.
  • Record the most stressful sound from your daily life. Make it your ringtone. Observe what it desensitizes.
