Constraint of the Week: The Day in Verse

The Day in Verse, Constraint #66

For an entire day, answer every question in iambic pentameter… ten syllables. No exception. At the supermarket checkout too.

Reference artist(s): Georges Perec.

The protocol

  1. Brush up on iambic pentameter the night before: ten syllables, alternating stressed and unstressed.
  2. From the morning on, apply the constraint. For each question asked, mentally construct your response in ten syllables before speaking.
  3. Don’t warn anyone unless you absolutely must in a critical professional context.
  4. Write down the best exchanges… those that came naturally, those that surprised your listeners.
  5. At the end of the day, write a “verse report”… a poem of twelve lines in iambic pentameter about your day. Submit on the site.

Variants

  • Answer in haikus instead of iambic pentameter.
  • Answer only with questions, always in iambic pentameter.
