Constraint of the Week: The Word of the Day

The Word of the Day, Constraint #62

Pick a random word from a dictionary. Slip it naturally into every conversation throughout the day. Count how many times you succeed.

Reference artist(s): Ben Vautier.

The protocol

  1. In the morning, open a paper dictionary to a random page. Point to a random word on the page. That’s your word of the day.
  2. Memorize it. It must be placed naturally in your conversations… not quoted as an exercise, used.
  3. All day long, look for ways to slip that word into your exchanges. Naturally, without sounding forced.
  4. Each time you succeed, discreetly note it down.
  5. At the end of the day, count the score and note the three most surprising contexts where you managed to use the word. Submit on the site.

Variants

  • Pick two words. Use them in the same sentence.
  • Choose a rare or complex word you never normally use.
