Constraint of the Week: The Backwards Dinner

The Backwards Dinner, Constraint #67

Serve dessert first. Then the starter. The main course last. Nothing else changes. Observe how the order modifies pleasure and conversation.

Reference artist(s): Erwin Wurm.

The protocol

  1. Invite at least one other person. Prepare a full meal with starter, main course, and dessert.
  2. At the table, serve dessert first… without explanation if you want to maintain the surprise.
  3. Observe the reactions. Eat normally, but in reverse order.
  4. Continue with the starter. Then the main course.
  5. After the meal, discuss what the order changed… taste, conversation, the feeling of hunger and fullness. Note one observation per guest. Submit on the site.

Variants

  • Serve all dishes at the same time on the table. Everyone eats in the order of their choice.
  • Also reverse the cooking process… start with what is normally eaten last.
