The Unknown Dish, Constraint #61
Cook a dish you’ve never made. Without help, without consulting a recipe. Just the ingredients, your memory, and your instinct. Eat the result, whatever it turns out to be.
Reference artist(s): George Brecht.
The protocol
- Choose a dish you’ve eaten at someone’s home, in a restaurant, or imagined but never cooked.
- Buy the ingredients you think are necessary… from memory, by logic, by intuition.
- Cook. Without opening a recipe site, without asking an AI. Your approximate understanding of the thing is the constraint.
- Eat the result. Even if it’s a failure. Note what worked and what didn’t.
- Photograph the finished dish. Write the recipe after the fact… what you actually did, not what you should have done. Submit both on the site.
Variants
- Do it with a dish from a culture you don’t know.
- Invite someone to dinner without telling them it’s a dish you’ve never made.
