Sol LeWitt Instruction
Write a constraint. Send it to a stranger. Never see the result.
Write a precise constraint (10 lines max). Send it to a stranger via the site. They execute it. You will never see the result. They won't know your name either.
Instructions
- Think of something you want to exist in the world... a gesture, an image, a sound, an action... without being able to do it yourself.
- Write the instruction in ten lines maximum. Be precise about the actions, vague about the expected result. 'Draw a straight line from the floor to the ceiling with what you have on hand'... not 'make a beautiful drawing'.
- Transmit the instruction to someone you don't know, by any means. Slip it in a book, send it by mail, leave it in a public place.
- You will receive no feedback. You will not know if it was executed, or how. That's the rule.
- The trace of this constraint is the instruction text itself. Publish it as an autonomous work.
Variants
Write an instruction impossible to execute perfectly. Observe what the participant does with the impossible.
Write an instruction using only questions.
