Portrait of a Stranger
One stranger's portrait per week. Ask, draw, display.
Meet a stranger each week. Ask if you can do their portrait (drawing, photo, painting, text). Display the result in public space or on the site.
Instructions
- Choose your medium in advance... quick pencil sketch, phone photo, descriptive text, audio recording.
- Identify a public space where people stop... café, market, train station, park.
- Approach someone. Simply say: 'I make portraits of strangers for an art project. May I do yours?'
- Make the portrait... in the presence of the person, or from memory if they refuse to be observed.
- Show the result to the person if possible. Offer them a copy. Post on the site.
Variants
Never show the portrait to the person.
Make only text portraits... five sentences that describe someone without ever mentioning their physical appearance.
