The Inherited Recipe
Cook a recipe that belongs to someone else. Follow it exactly. Don't adapt anything.
Ask someone for a recipe that matters to them. A family recipe, a memory. Cook it by following their instructions exactly. Don't adapt, don't improve. Just reproduce.
Instructions
- Ask someone close to you for a recipe that matters to them. Not a famous dish... a personal recipe.
- Write down their recipe exactly as they give it to you. With their words, their measurements, their gestures.
- Buy the exact ingredients. If they say 'a pinch', put a pinch.
- Cook following the recipe to the letter. Don't taste along the way if the recipe doesn't say to.
- Photograph the result. Eat. Then write three lines about the gap between their dish and yours.
Variants
Do the same with a recipe from a stranger. Ask someone you don't know for their personal recipe.
Cook the same recipe twice. Once by following the recipe strictly, once from memory after a week.
