Constraint of the Week: The Noise Kitchen

The Noise Kitchen, Constraint #64

Cook using only the sounds produced by utensils and ingredients as a musical score. Nothing else. Record the result.

Reference artist(s): Luc Ferrari.

The protocol

  1. Choose a recipe that involves varied gestures… cutting, beating, boiling, pouring, mincing.
  2. Set up an audio recorder (phone placed nearby) before starting. Start recording.
  3. Cook normally. But be aware of the sounds you produce… the knife on the board, the pan heating up, the boiling water, the sizzling oil.
  4. Halfway through, listen to a few seconds of the recording. Adjust your gestures to vary the sounds… slower, louder, more rhythmic.
  5. Finish cooking. Stop the recording. Listen to the whole thing. Submit the audio on the site. Title: the name of the dish.

Variants

  • Cook the same dish twice… once normally, once trying to create a sound composition. Compare.
  • Do it with two people… voices forbidden, only kitchen sounds.
