The Sound Map
Map the sounds of your neighborhood. Walk, listen, note everything.
Walk through your neighborhood with only your ears. Map every sound you hear: where it comes from, what it is, how it makes you feel.
Instructions
- Choose a route through your neighborhood. A walk of about thirty minutes.
- Walk slowly. At each notable sound, stop. Note the location and the sound.
- Classify the sounds: natural, mechanical, human, unknown.
- Draw a map of your route with the sounds placed on it.
- Record three of these sounds with your phone. Post the map and the recordings on the site.
Variants
Do the same walk at different times of day. Compare the sound maps.
Do it with someone. Each person maps independently, then compare.
