Draw the path of an email. Compare your drawing to the actual traceroute.
Draw the path of an email you just sent (from your computer to the SMTP server, then to the recipient's server).
Instructions
- Send any email. Before seeing the response, hand-draw the path this email will take from your computer to the server, then to the recipient's server.
- Open a terminal. Type 'traceroute' with the server address to see the real path.
- Note the names of intermediate servers. You can look up their location.
- Draw the real path next to the imagined path.
- Post both drawings on the site. The gap between what we imagine and what actually exists is the work.
Variants
Do the same thing with a request to a website.
Find out which physical countries your data passes through. Draw a world map with the relevant countries.
